Animated Painting by Nicole Hewat

Thank you to Nicole Hewat for developing this video for us! After I provided some pictures of our vegetables and gardens, she painted about 300 plates of glass and photographed each one to create this beautiful animation!
Peter J. Kovacs then helped with some technical work, and gave the video its musical element by adding a song by a local musician, Luke Michielsen.

Nicole is a wonderful up and coming local artist interested in creating more animated paintings. She can be reached by email here.

Musical Chairs! Welcome Lisa!

We have some job swapping going on right now here at Backyard Bounty!

First I shall say thank you to the wonderful staff and interns we had this year who are moving on to other great things in life. Thank you Ursula, Ryan, Jessica, Joseph and Elisa for all of your hard work this year!

Lisa Conroy who was one of our interns focusing her work at the Peri-Urban site this year, continued into November harvesting the rest of the vegetables, delivering them to restaurants and tucking the gardens in for the winter. She will be one of our Senior Farmers for 2012. Thomas who was one of our Senior Farmers this year and who took care of the vegetables headed for the CSA pick-ups will be managing the whole show next year as of January.

Finally, you must be wondering what that means for me. Far from getting the boot, I have the opportunity to work full-time for Robert’s Environmental Consulting Firm, Orland Conservation. I am very gracious for the opportunity and looking forward to learning some new things. I will miss working with Backyard Bounty and the community of people I have enjoyed getting to know through our pick-ups and markets. Thank you so much!

Planning for Next Year

That’s what we do over the winter. That and return to classes at the Uni, go on a couple holidays, get work for our other jobs done, etc. You will not find us at any markets any longer this year, all of our vegetables are finished up and the gardens have been put to bed. In the mean time, stay tuned for information on how to get your next year’s share and what the prices will be, other creative things we have planned for next year and check out our new t-shirts! They would make great Christmas gifts!

These beautiful shirts were provided by Hempire in Guelph, and printed byby Source Screen Printing in Markham. The artwork was wonderfully created by Karen Kesteloot, a fantastic artist in Guelph and a part of the Backyard Bounty team. The shirts come in bamboo and hemp. We’re at the Guelph Farmer’s Market!

It has been confirmed! Backyard Bounty will be bringing our locally-grown vegetables back to the Guelph Farmer’s Market every Saturday this season. We’ll be selling local vegetables (including lettuce, spinach, salad greens, carrots, radishes, tomatoes, beans, cucumber and squash, to name a few) and flowers from our market table fresh each week, according to seasonal availability. Our vegetables are grown organically, by trained farmers, in the back yards of Guelph residents. It doesn’t get more local than this.

The location of our table is in the middle of the market, facing the centre rear door to the parking lot. Please don’t hesitate to come and chat with us and learn more about what Backyard Bounty is all about!
